Voter Registration

Requirements

To be eligible to register to vote you must be:

  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register)
  • A resident of the City of Portage for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A United States citizen
  • At least 18 years of age (when you vote)
  • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison (after completing a sentence you can participate in elections without restriction)

If you're not sure if you're registered, you can check online at the Michigan Voter Information Center.

Within 14 days before an election, all applications must be submitted to the Portage City Clerk's Office in person, and you must provide proof of where you live. Documents must have your name and address (you can also show a digital copy). Acceptable documents include:

  • Michigan driver's license or state ID
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government documents

1Make Sure You Are Eligible

Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements listed above. To register online, you must also have a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID. If you don't have one, you can still register in person or by mail. 

If you are registering within 14 days of an election, you must register in person and show proof of residency.

Eligible voters that have a Michigan driver's license or state ID can register online at the Michigan Voter Information Center at Michigan.gov/VoterRegistration 


3City Clerk Processes Application

The Portage City Clerk's Office will issue you a voter registration card upon processing your application. It will contain your information and where to go to cast your ballot.

Sometimes polling locations can change so it's always a good idea to double check before going to vote.
