  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibitions - What's in a Name?

    Rotating exhibitions that focus on local arts and history are featured at Portage City Hall throughout the year. The exhibitions are free to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Ever wonder about the names on some of the streets and other areas in Portage? Discover the history behind names such as Austin, Kilgore, Milham, Dry Prairie and others that created a footprint on the City of Portage we know today. If you have photos or stories to share about people who shaped the early settlement of Portage from 1830 to the early 1900’s, please contact Portage Parks & Recreation to add their history to our archives.

  3. Ranger Hike - Migration Station

    Take a hike with Park Rangers through West Lake Nature Preserve with a pit-stop to watch for an array of migratory birds! Learn about their migration journey throughout the year and how to identify different species. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, notebooks and pens. Dress appropriately for the weather.

  4. Junior Ranger Earn-A-Badge - Service Badge

    April 21, 2021, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM @ Schrier Park

    The Junior Ranger Club is a fun way to learn more about the Portage Park system and to earn an official Junior Ranger shield as a wildlife steward. The Junior Ranger Club is an activity-based program offering eight different badges that can be earned by completing specific activities: arts, endurance, health, history, nature, science, service and survival. Need a little help with finishing your badges? During these programs, a Junior Ranger may bring an adult and together, work on specific badge activities. These programs are free, include supplies and are led by Parks staff. You can attend just one or all of the programs. Based on COVID restrictions, sessions may be offered virtually with supplies available for pick up at City Hall. All programs run from 6 – 7 PM. Space is limited, so do not wait to register!   5. Garlic Mustard Pull

    April 24, 2021, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Ramona Park & Beach

    Garlic mustard is the most destructive invasive plant in Portage, with its rapid growth impeding native plants. Volunteer with the City of Portage Environmental Board to learn how to identify garlic mustard, remove it and properly dispose of it. All ages are welcome to participate.   6. Rolling with Ranger

    April 24, 2021, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM @ Portage Creek Bicentennial Park

    Get riding with this guided bike ride with Park Rangers. This program is geared for kids who will learn how to complete a pre-ride safety check and tune-up on their bicycle. Participants must bring in their own bike, helmet and a chaperone (if 16 years or younger). To register, visit and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals.   7. 13th Annual Green-A-Thon & Portage Farmers Market Sneak Peek

    The Portage Youth Advisory Committee, in cooperation with the Portage Environmental Board and Park Board, will host the 13th Annual Green-A-Thon to celebrate Earth Day. Green-A-Thon will feature games and representatives from many local organizations and businesses providing education about environmental ideas that can be used in your home or business. For the first year ever, the event will coordinate with a special Farmers Market to give patrons a sneak peek of what is in store this season at the Portage Farmers Market.     Celebrate Arbor Day in Portage, a Tree City! Take a guided tree identification hike, make nature prints with Kalamazoo Book Arts Club, learn more about tree science and participate in a reading of The Lorax by Dr. Suess!
