On fitness registration day, priority will be as follows: 

  • MyActiveCenter (MAC) has first priority  
  • In-person registration has second priority  
  • Phone Registration and Voicemails will have last priority 

Please note: Phone Calls and Voicemails left earlier or before 8 AM will not be returned.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

Join the Portage Zhang Senior Center for an exciting day trip to see the Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field on Thursday, June 19. The $155 fee includes motorcoach transportation and a game ticket. Let's root for the Cubs and enjoy a day of baseball fun!

ThinkFirst to Prevent Falls

Friday, June 13, 1 – 3:30 PM 

FREE

ThinkFirst to Prevent Falls is a free two-hour presentation on the basics of fall prevention for older adults. Topics covered include fear of falling, safety inside the home, community safety, exercise and many more. Participants are given resources for more extensive classes, exercise classes and other supporting programs to take advantage of in their community. This program is generously provided through Bronson Methodist Hospital. To register, please call (269) 329-4555.

AARP Driver Safety Image

AARP Driver Safety        

Monday, June 16, Tuesday and June 17 (2-Day Course) 

9 AM – 1 PM 

$20 for AARP Members / $25 for Non-AARP Members 

The 2-day course teaches proven driving techniques to help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Participants will learn: 

  • Important facts about the effects of medication on driving. 
  • How to reduce driver distractions. 
  • How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car. 
  • Proper use of safety belts, airbags, anti-lock brakes, and new technology found in cars today. 
  • Techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way, and roundabouts. 
  • Age-related physical changes and how to adjust your driving to compensate 

Participants will pay the AARP instructor directly on the first day of class. Acceptable forms of payment include cash or check. No credit cards will be accepted. Spots are limited, please register by calling (269) 329-4555.

In partnership with Hearing Specialists of Kalamazoo

Dr. Jim Cole, a licensed audiologist from the Hearing Specialists of Kalamazoo, will be at the PZSC every third Wednesday of the month providing hearing screenings, examination of the ear canal and ear drum, hearing aid cleaning, checks & minor repairs, and hearing/tinnitus/ hearing aid education; all at no charge. 

Fun Walks!

Wednesday, June 18

Meet location:  West Lake Nature Preserve.  9001 S Westnedge  

Please meet the group leader, Lynn, at 10 AM. The walk will begin at 10:15 AM. Walkers will proceed on the trail, taking us past the softball fields and onto the trail that ends at the  Eliason Reserve.  The trail is mostly shaded and offers opportunities to enjoy a walk based on participant ability and comfort up to about 3 miles round trip. You may turn back at any time. Parking & restrooms are available from the entrance on South Shore Dr. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a water bottle.

New Member Meet & Eat

The PZSC Meet & Eat event is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has recently become a member of the Portage Zhang Senior Center or is considering joining. The event is designed to help you get to know the Center better and introduce you to the diverse programs and events that are scheduled throughout the year. 

During the event, you will be treated to a complimentary light breakfast while we provide you with an overview of all the PZSC has to offer. You will learn about the different programs and events tailored to the interests and needs of our members.

Concerts in the Courtyard - Tony Fields & Doug Decker

$10 and Open to the Public  

Join us as we welcome the return of Tony Fields and Doug Decker! Tony and Doug bring a fantastic evening of jazz, blues, Motown, funk, and some "old school" R&B. Battle Creek native Tony Fields possesses smooth, soulful vocals and a commanding presence that draws the audience to him. Combine this with Doug Decker's outstanding mastery of the keyboards and great vocals for a can’t-miss night of music!  

Cash bar available, pop and bottled water available for purchase. Registration is required by calling (269) 329-4555. Payment reserves your spot. Attendees are encouraged to bring sun protection and a water bottle. In the case of inclement weather, concert will be held indoors.

Ceramics - Sgraffito Tiles

Thursday, June 26 

4 - 6 PM  

$25 Members / $30 Non-Members   

Instructed by: Kimberly Barrett  

Always wanted to try your hand at ceramics? Join us as ceramicist Kimberly Barrett teaches this beginner class on the Italian art of sgraffito! Together we will look at sgraffito-style ceramics, discuss how this technique is applied on clay with underglazes. We will walk through the clay process and students will try different clay tools and learn hands-on how they can be used to scrape away underglaze to create their own sgraffito ceramic tile. Final pieces will be bisque fired, coated with clear gloss and glaze fired by the instructor. To register for this fun new class, call (269) 329-4555.

Call for Centenarians: Celebrate a Century of Life at the Portage Zhang Senior Center!

Are you 100 years old—or will you be celebrating your 100th birthday in 2025? If so, the Portage Zhang Senior Center invites you to be a guest of honor at this year’s Centenarian Brunch, a heartfelt event recognizing those who have reached the remarkable milestone of a century of life.

“Tides of Time: Celebrating a Century of You” is the theme of this year’s celebration, paying tribute to the wisdom, resilience, and invaluable contributions of our community’s oldest members. The brunch will take place on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Portage Zhang Senior Center.

Each Centenarian is invited to attend free of charge, along with two special guests, for a warm and joyful gathering filled with memories, recognition, and community spirit.
