Architectural Gems of Ann Arbor & Detroit

Wednesday, June 11, 2025

$130 Member / $140 Non-Member

Pricing includes all gratuities.

Experience a day of awe-inspiring architecture as we journey eastward to explore stunning properties that showcase exceptional design. Our adventure begins at the University of Michigan Law Library, where we'll admire the Gothic-style buildings that define the William Cook Law Quadrangle, including the Alan F. and Alene Smith Library, “regarded as an architectural de force and one of the world’s best law libraries”.

From Ann Arbor, we head to the Detroit Public Library, a prime example of Renaissance Revival architecture, constructed from Vermont marble and serpentine Italian marble. Designed by the renowned Cass Gilbert—whose iconic works include the Woolworth Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and several state capitols—Andrew Carnegie commissioned the Detroit Public Library as a gift to the city in 1912.

The highlight of the afternoon is the Fisher Building, called “Detroit’s largest art object.” Opened in 1928 and designed by famed architect Albert Kahn—who also created the General Motors Building—it features a 441-ft tower, a three-story arcade with frescoes, mosaics, marble, and brass, and Italian marble floors inspired by Roman churches. Built by the Fisher brothers, pioneers in auto design, the Art Deco landmark was their gift to Detroit. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1990.

Don't miss this unforgettable tour of architectural wonders!
