[ARCHIVED] Winter Reminders

Sidewalk

The City of Portage reminds residents of winter property maintenance activities and overnight on-street parking restrictions.  We know that it can be challenging to keep up with winter maintenance; however, good property stewardship is appreciated by your neighbors and the City of Portage.  If you become aware of a neighbor who might need assistance with property maintenance this winter, lend a hand if you are able.

Sidewalks

Public sidewalks adjacent to all types of property (residential, commercial, etc.) provide safe routes to schools, bus stops and other important destinations.  As a reminder to city residents, City Code requires all sidewalks to be cleared of snow and ice throughout the winter season, which is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner.  To ensure sidewalks are accessible, a minimum clearance width of three feet is recommended.  Special attention to sidewalks adjacent to street corners is also requested to ensure that snow banks not obstruct access to and from the sidewalk.

Fire Hydrants

The Portage Fire Division requests property owners to clear snow away from any fire hydrants on or adjacent to their property.  Should there be a fire nearby, it is imperative that firefighters have clear access to fire hydrants so that fire hoses can be immediately attached and used to fight the fire.

Overnight Parking Restriction

The City of Portage overnight parking ordinance remains in effect through April 15.  The ordinance prohibits overnight parking on any public street between the hours of 2 and 6 AM from November 1 through April 15.  The ordinance is meant to aid in the swift and complete removal of snow from city streets during the overnight hours.  This restriction is in effect whether or not snow is present. Additionally, the City of Portage recommends that during times outside the restricted parking hours when snow is present, residents make an effort to not park on the street.
