[ARCHIVED] Welcome Back Students!

WMU Flags on Westnedge Square

The City of Portage is excited to welcome Western Michigan University students back to the Kalamazoo area for the start of the 2025-2026 academic year. As students settle in for a new semester, the city invites them to explore all that Portage has to offer beyond the classroom. With a variety of shopping destinations, diverse dining options, and abundant recreational opportunities, Portage is the perfect place to shop, dine, and play.

“College is a time of exploration, and we encourage WMU students to make Portage part of their experience,” said City Manager, Pat McGinnis. “Whether it’s discovering a new restaurant, enjoying our parks and trails, or supporting local businesses, there’s something here for everyone.”

Students and visitors alike can take advantage of Portage’s welcoming community, scenic trails, lakes, and vibrant retail areas, making it a great complement to student life at WMU.
