A Smarter, Safer, More Affordable Way to Collect Trash in Portage

Single-Hauler Waste Collection Coming March 1, 2026

On July 22, 2025, the Portage City Council approved the transition to a single-hauler waste collection system, which will streamline garbage, yard waste, and recycling services throughout the city. A five-year contract was awarded to the low bidder, Waste Management (WM), to provide residential waste services citywide beginning March 1, 2026. This decision aligns with the City Council’s long-standing goals to adopt best practices that support efficient, reliable, responsible, and accountable solid waste removal.

Moving to a single-hauler system will simplify service delivery, reduce costs for most Portage households, and lessen environmental and infrastructure impacts. With WM’s monthly garbage service fee set at $14.04, Portage households are expected to save an average of 44%. Citizens will benefit from a single rate, transparent billing, and no hidden fees or confusing contracts. The city will also assist in addressing customer service concerns.

As an added convenience, residents will be able to schedule the collection of one curbside bulk item for collection each week, eliminating the need to wait for the Spring Cleanup Program or transport items to a landfill for a fee.

The new system will also improve safety and environmental outcomes. With fewer collection trucks on the road, neighborhoods will see reduced congestion, safer streets, and lower emissions.

The Portage City Administration is currently developing a detailed implementation plan, which will include a registration process for services, delivery of standardized carts for garbage and recycling, return of existing carts, development of frequently asked questions, and numerous other components. Recycling services will continue to be funded by the voter-approved millage, while garbage and subscription-based yard waste service fees will be paid directly to WM by Portage citizens.

Residents should expect updates in the Portager newsletter, on the City of Portage website, and via official city social media channels as the transition moves forward.
