The City of Portage Street Mill & Fill Program will run from June 10 – 14, materials and weather permitting. The Mill & Fill Program consists of major maintenance to selected streets to enhance structural integrity and ride quality, as well as prolong the life of the street. These improvements include removal of badly worn areas of the road and a two-inch overlay of new asphalt. The city has contracted with Michigan Paving & Materials of Kalamazoo to perform the Mill & Fill program.
The following locations are scheduled for this project:
- Woodlawn Drive (the south cul-de-sac to Wetherbee Avenue)
- Woodlawn Drive (Wetherbee Avenue to Woodbine)
- Woodbine Avenue (Woodlawn Drive to Portage Road)
- West Vickery Road (Portage Road to the dead end)
During paving operations, one lane of travel will remain open at all times. Residents should avoid driving on the “tac coat” – an oily substance sprayed on the street before paving to bond the new asphalt to the old surface – as this material may attach to tires and vehicle undercarriages and be carried onto driveways or garage floors. To ensure the safety of residents and contracted employees and to facilitate the efficient completion of the project, the city requests that vehicles be removed from the roadway during the project.
Questions or concerns regarding the work may be directed to the Department of Public Works at (269) 329-4444.
