The City of Portage has engaged College H.U.N.K.S. to remove tornado debris from city streets. The collection program will begin on Wednesday, May 29, and will service both public and private streets in the areas impacted by the May 7 Tornados. The boundaries of the cleanup area are currently being established and will be announced soon at www.portagemi.gov/927 and on Facebook @CityofPortageMI.
By starting the debris cleanup on May 29, the City of Portage aims to make significant progress in clearing tree debris while giving residents time to place tornado debris at the curb. Residents are reminded to separate debris materials according to FEMA guidelines (attached).
Property owners with structures that are significantly damaged or beyond repair should coordinate removal efforts with their insurance company. This curbside collection effort focuses solely on removing storm debris, not on debris resulting from dismantling or removing deconstructed buildings.
Hazardous waste should be taken to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center located at 1301 Lamont Avenue in Kalamazoo. For hours of operation, visit www.kalcounty.com/hhw.
College H.U.N.K.S. brings extensive experience with municipal cleanup programs, having conducted similar spring cleanup activities for nearby communities such as Texas Township and Comstock Township.
