On May 7, 2024, the City of Portage, Michigan experienced major damage across the city as a result of two tornadoes. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities or serious injuries reported; however, many individuals have been displaced. One shelter is open at the First Assembly of God at 5500 Oakland Drive. Portage residents needing assistance with sheltering or other human service needs, please call 2-1-1 or Red Cross at 1-800-Red-Cross.
City crews continue to work in the hardest-hit areas of the city to assess the damage. There are still numerous downed power lines and trees blocking roads, including South Westnedge Avenue at Garden Lane and West Centre Avenue between Oakland Drive and Angling Road. Other secondary and neighborhood roadways are also blocked. Traffic signals throughout the city are not functioning and should be treated as four-way stops.
Consumers Energy has reported that 23,000 customers in Kalamazoo County are without power. Consumers has 133 crews working to restore power, with a target of total restoration by 10 PM on Wednesday, May 8.
As the city continues to assess damage and work to clear roadways, cleanup plans are being considered. For the time being, residents are asked to place tree branches and brush at the curb. Trees and brush cut down by a professional tree service can be disposed of at the city’s Oakland Drive Compost Facility at 10905 Oakland Drive. The Compost Facility will be open 24 hours a day until further notice. Announcements regarding the disposal of other storm debris will be forthcoming.
Residents are urged to use caution when contracting with private parties to assist with storm cleanup and restoration. Always use a licensed and insured contractor and be cautious about door-to-door offers. Ask friends, family, and associates for recommendations about contractors they have hired, and avoid paying in cash.
