On Thursday, November 9, the city’s contractor, Michigan Paving & Materials will begin an end-of-season Mill & Fill project on Oakland Drive on either side of the I-94 overpass. Milling will begin on Thursday, November 9 with paving scheduled to happen on Friday, November 10, weather permitting.
During paving operations, one lane of travel will remain open at all times. Motorists should be aware that a “tac coat” (oily substance) is sprayed on the street before paving to bond the new asphalt to the old surface. Driving on the tac coat should be avoided as this material may attach to tires and vehicle undercarriages and may be carried onto your driveway or garage floor. Motorists are urged to drive with caution and watch out for crews engaged in this work.
The City of Portage Mill and Fill Program consists of major maintenance to selected streets to enhance the structural integrity and ride quality, as well as prolong the life of the street. These improvements include the removal of badly worn areas of the road and overlaying the surface with two inches of new asphalt.
Questions concerning this project can be directed to the Department of Public Works at (269) 329-4444.
