[ARCHIVED] End-Of-Season Mill & Fill Project

2023 10-30 Mill Fill Program

Update Wednesday, November  - Paving on Diamondview Drive, Clearwater Terrace, Bitmore Lane, Brightwater Lane, and Chancellor Drive begins today.

On Tuesday, October 31, the city’s contractor, Michigan Paving & Materials will begin an end-of-season Mill & Fill project on the following streets:

  • Diamondview Drive (East Shore – Brightwater)
  • Clearwater Terrace (East Shore – Biltmore)
  • Biltmore Lane (Brightwater – Clearwater)
  • Brightwater Lane (Diamondview – Biltmore)
  • Chancellor Drive (Diamondview – Clearwater)

This work is being performed at this time due to favorable pricing being passed along from the vendor. Milling on these streets will take place on Tuesday, October 31 following leaf pickup in the neighborhood and will be complete no later than 4 PM ahead of traditional trick-or-treating hours. Paving on these streets is scheduled to take place the week of November 6, weather permitting.

During paving operations, one lane of travel will remain open at all times.  Residents should be aware that a “tac coat” (oily substance) is sprayed on the street before paving to bond the new asphalt to the old surface. Driving on the tac coat should be avoided as this material may attach to tires and vehicle undercarriages and may be carried onto your driveway or garage floor. To ensure the safety of residents and contracted employees and to facilitate the efficient completion of the project, the city requests that vehicles be removed from the roadway during the project.

The City of Portage Mill and Fill Program consists of major maintenance to selected streets to enhance structural integrity and ride quality, as well as prolong the life of the street. These improvements include the removal of badly worn areas of the road and overlaying the surface with 2.0 inches of new asphalt.

Questions concerning this project can be directed to the Department of Public Works at (269) 329-4444.
