The City of Portage Encourages Residents to Take Precautions to Prevent Mosquito-Borne Illness
The Kalamazoo County Health Department recently alerted residents about the increased risk of mosquito-borne illnesses following a confirmed case of the Jamestown Canyon Virus in Kalamazoo County.
With warm temperatures and standing water creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, residents are encouraged to take simple precautions to reduce exposure and protect their families when out in the community, their yard, or exploring Portage parks. To prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of illness, follow these safety tips:
- Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535. Please read the label before application.
- Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
- Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed, including flowerpots, birdbaths, buckets, old tires, gutters, etc.
- Keep window and door screens in good repair to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
- Limit the time outdoors during peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn).
