Scalin’ Up for Summer Returns to South Westnedge Park this Saturday, June 14
Schools are out and summer is in the air. Portage Parks & Recreation will host Scalin' Up for Summer, sponsored by Boat City Marine, on Saturday, June 14, from 10 AM to 1 PM at South Westnedge Park, 9010 South Westnedge Avenue. The first 250 kids to complete a Scalin’ Up for Summer passport will receive a FREE FISHING ROD courtesy of the Getting Families Fishing and Boating Initiative and Boat City Marine.
Over twenty vendors will be on site. Hawg Trough returns with their 2,000-gallon mobile fish tank filled with local freshwater fish! Get an up-close look at scaly creatures like ball pythons, a large Tegu lizard, bearded dragons, turtles, geckos, and more from ReptilesLS and the Michigan Society of Herpetologists. See birds of prey like turkey vultures and owls from Wild Side Rehabilitation. Learn safe ways to enjoy an outdoor Michigan summer, how to tie a fly for fly fishing, how local river and water rescue missions work, and safe boating and kayaking practices with boats and kayaks on site. Participate in crafts, get a FREE airbrush or glitter tattoo from Fun Services, get a FREE balloon, and view ATVs and side-by-sides on site. Bring your appetite for Floatin’ Franks hot dogs and The Little Scoop Ice Cream Truck. Both accept cash or credit/debit cards. During the event, the Portage Department of Public Safety will also host a bike rodeo and share bike repair and safety tips.
