December is upon us, make your holiday season cheery and bright by joining the City of Portage on Saturday, December 7, at the Annual Traditional Holiday & Tree Lighting Ceremony. Celebrate the magic of the season starting at 6 PM with the lighting of the Mayor’s Tree in the City Centre. There, the Portage Northern High School (PNHS) Choir will sing carols, Steve Rossio will read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” I Love Portage Essay winners will read their essays and help light the tree, and Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in their horse-drawn carriage to lead gatherers to Celery Flats.
At Celery Flats, continue enjoying the PNHS Choir while browsing the small boutique holiday marketplace, purchase a tasty treat from Ibison's Food Truck, or delight in seeing the on-site tractors. Stroll through the grounds gazing at the individually decorated Christmas cards and trees, visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at Stuart Manor, or stop at the 1856 Schoolhouse to fill out letters to Santa. Be sure to also swing by the historic Grain Elevator to hear holiday favorites performed by the Proclamation Brass Band as complimentary milk and cookies are served in the large, heated tent along with children’s holiday crafts. The Portage Community Center will be serving hot chocolate and cider (cash donations accepted) and will have a donation bin available for canned or dried foods or unused winter wear for children or adults. Don't miss the ice carving demonstrations, petting zoo, and toasty warming bonfires.
