Starting early next week, the City of Portage will commence a major project to reconstruct the parking lot at Portage City Hall. The project will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase requiring the closure of the South Westnedge Avenue entrance/exit. During this phase, the public is advised to use the Centre Avenue entrance/exit, which is a right-in/right-out-only access point. The project also necessitates the relocation of the Portage Farmers Market to the Portage Zhang Senior Center at 203 East Centre Avenue for the remainder of the market season.
The city awarded the project to H&K Excavating of Kalamazoo for $1,108,609.70, with completion anticipated in early November.
Key improvements include:
- Installation of new asphalt, concrete sidewalks, and curbs.
- An ice melt system at the entrance and exit in front of City Hall.
- Enhanced landscaping to beautify the area.
- Upgrades to meet ADA accessibility standards.
- Reorientation of parking layout for better traffic flow.
- Increased number of parking spaces.
- Improved lighting for safety and visibility.
- Enhanced drainage infrastructure to prevent water accumulation.
- Expanded electric vehicle charging stations.
- Additional sidewalks for emergency exits.
These enhancements aim to improve accessibility, safety, and convenience for all visitors to Portage City Hall.
