Savin Lake Services Inc. begins aquatic plant harvesting across portions of Austin Lake on Monday, June 24, 2024, on behalf of the Austin Lake Ripairians. The project is scheduled to be completed by Tuesday, July 2.
Mechanical harvesting is a method commonly used to control nuisance aquatic plant growth in Michigan’s inland lakes. When plants are harvested, the biomass is removed from the lake along with the nutrients contained within the plant tissue. This prevents the re-absorption of these nutrients back into the lake and reduces the risk of oxygen depletion.
