The City of Portage has established a cooling center at the Portage Zhang Senior Center (203 East Centre Avenue) as a place for residents to go to escape the daytime heat. The cooling center will be open on Monday, June 17 until 8 PM and Tuesday, June 18 from 7 AM until 7:30 PM. The center has plenty of seating and water available for the public. Additional dates are being considered and will be announced by the city through its normal media channels.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in Portage beginning at noon on Monday, June 17, with heat index values of up to 100 degrees expected. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illness, especially for seniors and people with chronic health conditions.
To limit your risk of heat illness, drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, and stay out of the sun. Wear lightweight, loose clothing and take cool showers or baths. Limit your outdoor activity. If you must work outdoors, schedule tasks earlier or later in the day. Check on your relatives and neighbors, and make sure your pets have plenty of water.
