The City of Portage has engaged College H.U.N.K.S. to remove tornado debris from city streets. The collection program will begin on Wednesday, May 29, and will service both public and private streets in the areas impacted by the May 7 Tornados.
The Tornado Debris Pickup map (below) displays the dates that College H.U.N.K.S will be in each affected area. The highlighted streets in the RED zone will be collected May 29, 30 & 31, with a return collection June 10 - 14. The BLUE zone will be collected June 3 - 7. Following these collections, an evaluation of the city will be conducted to determine if an additional collection is necessary. Residents are reminded to separate debris materials from any remaining tree debris.
Property owners with structures that are significantly damaged or beyond repair should coordinate removal efforts with their insurance company. This curbside collection effort focuses solely on removing storm debris, not on debris resulting from dismantling or removing deconstructed buildings.
Hazardous waste should be taken to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center located at 1301 Lamont Avenue in Kalamazoo. For hours of operation, visit www.kalcounty.com/hhw.
College H.U.N.K.S. brings extensive experience with municipal cleanup programs, having conducted similar spring cleanup activities for nearby communities such as Texas Township and Comstock Township.
