  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibition - One-Room Schoolhouse

    May 7, 2021, 9:00 AM - June 25, 2021, 4:00 PM @ Portage City Hall

    Rotating exhibitions are featured in the atrium at Portage City Hall (7900 South Westnedge Avenue) throughout the year and focus on local arts and history. The exhibitions are FREE to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 4 PM. An exhibit to feature the historic One-Room District #8 Schoolhouse also known as Prairie Edge School built in 1856. Don’t miss these previously unpublicized large-scale images of what days were like during these times.

    The Portage Farmers Market opens May 9 and will run through October 24, every Sunday from 10 AM – 2 PM.   4. Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101 Course

    June 12, 2021, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM @ City Hall 7900 S. Westnedge Avenue

    The Smart Cycling Program is a great opportunity to learn how to ride your bike safely! This curriculum is certified by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and taught across the USA by League Certified Instructors with extensive riding and teaching experience. The course incorporates on-line and in-class learning, parking lot maneuvering drills and a group ride. You will learn: » Basic bike fit, inspection, and maintenance » How to ride safely and legally in traffic » How to improve your riding skills » How to avoid crashes » And much more Attendees will need a helmet and working bicycle to participate. This program is for cyclist 18 years and over. Space is limited. To register, visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button. Registration deadlines are April 25 for the May 8 course and June 5 for the June 12 course. Scholarships are available. This course is also a pre-requisite to become a Lead Cycling Instructor.

  5. Reptile Roundup

    Portage Parks & Recreation is excited to present the first ever Reptile Expo at the Celery Flats Historical Area. The Michigan Society of Herpetologists, Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary and many more vendors will be on-site for families to get an up-close look at different types of reptiles. Touch some reptiles and even take a picture with a few. Learn cool reptile facts, characteristics and habitats from fun presentations.
