  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibition - One-Room Schoolhouse

    May 7, 2021, 9:00 AM - June 25, 2021, 4:00 PM @ Portage City Hall

    Rotating exhibitions are featured in the atrium at Portage City Hall (7900 South Westnedge Avenue) throughout the year and focus on local arts and history. The exhibitions are FREE to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 4 PM. An exhibit to feature the historic One-Room District #8 Schoolhouse also known as Prairie Edge School built in 1856. Don’t miss these previously unpublicized large-scale images of what days were like during these times.

  3. Portage Farmers Market

    May 9, 2021, 10:00 AM - October 24, 2021, 2:00 PM @ City Hall Parking Lot

    The Portage Farmers Market opens May 9 and will run through October 24, every Sunday from 10 AM – 2 PM. Browse local vendors offering fresh produce, meat, eggs, fruits, baked goods, flowers, crafts, gifts, and more! Vendors interested in participating may contact Portage Parks & Recreation at 329-4522.   4. Mayor's Bicycle Ride

    May 15, 2021, 9:00 AM @ Celery Flats

    *NEW DATE - On Saturday, May 15, the Mayors of the City of Portage, Patricia Randall and the City of Kalamazoo, David Anderson will lead an 8-mile bike ride to commemorate Kalamazoo Bike Week, which runs from May 8 – 15, 2020. The event will start at Celery Flats on Garden Lane at 9 AM. Visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button to register. The registration deadline is May 13.

  5. Lanterns on the Lake

    May 15, 2021, 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM @ Ramona Park & Beach

    Light up the lake with a lantern that honors loved ones or float words of hope and encouragement. Feel hope and happiness with your community as you remember those you loved, together. Bring a picnic dinner to enjoy while you decorate your lantern. Live music will play until launch time at 9:30 PM. Participation is limited to 100 people due to social distancing requirements. Registration is required by May 12 for each person wishing to attend. Visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button. Lantern kits, including a floating lantern to launch on the water and a marker to decorate your lantern with your family, will be distributed to each registered participant beginning at 8 PM. To avoid impacting the environment, Portage Parks & Recreation will retrieve all of the lanterns from the lake after the festival.
