  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibitions - What's in a Name?

    Rotating exhibitions that focus on local arts and history are featured at Portage City Hall throughout the year. The exhibitions are free to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Ever wonder about the names on some of the streets and other areas in Portage? Discover the history behind names such as Austin, Kilgore, Milham, Dry Prairie and others that created a footprint on the City of Portage we know today. If you have photos or stories to share about people who shaped the early settlement of Portage from 1830 to the early 1900’s, please contact Portage Parks & Recreation to add their history to our archives.

  3. Heritage, Lineage, Ancestry, Genealogy - OH MY!

    How many times have you wondered about your family history? Where did my ancestors come from and what did they do? Were they a farmer, politician, explorer, builder, or merchant? If you are intrigued to learn of your family’s history, join a member of the Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society (KVGS) and ZOOM with us to discover resources that build and grow your family tree! If you have deep roots in the Portage area, we would be very interested in hearing more about your ancestry and their imprint on Portage! A computer and internet connection is required and be sure to complete the fun and interesting work in between classes. To register, visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button. This program requires a minimum number of participants to proceed. By registering for this class/event you are granting the City of Portage permission to share your name, phone number and email address with the Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society.

  4. Break Blast! Spring Break Edition

    Celebrate spring with this camp-style program. Explore Schrier Park woods for signs of spring through fun games, activities and learn how your family can be the best neighbor to local flora and fauna. This program will take place indoors and outdoors. Families are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy after the program. Space is limited.
