  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibitions - What's in a Name?

    Rotating exhibitions that focus on local arts and history are featured at Portage City Hall throughout the year. The exhibitions are free to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Ever wonder about the names on some of the streets and other areas in Portage? Discover the history behind names such as Austin, Kilgore, Milham, Dry Prairie and others that created a footprint on the City of Portage we know today. If you have photos or stories to share about people who shaped the early settlement of Portage from 1830 to the early 1900’s, please contact Portage Parks & Recreation to add their history to our archives.

  3. Garlic Mustard Pull

    April 24, 2021, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Ramona Park & Beach

    Garlic mustard is the most destructive invasive plant in Portage, with its rapid growth impeding native plants. Volunteer with the City of Portage Environmental Board to learn how to identify garlic mustard, remove it and properly dispose of it. All ages are welcome to participate. All garlic mustard pulls take place from 9 AM - 12 PM. Subscribe to Environmental Board updates, including weather cancellations and additional volunteer opportunities.   4. Rolling with Ranger

    April 24, 2021, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM @ Portage Creek Bicentennial Park

    Get riding with this guided bike ride with Park Rangers. This program is geared for kids who will learn how to complete a pre-ride safety check and tune-up on their bicycle. Participants must bring in their own bike, helmet and a chaperone (if 16 years or younger). To register, visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals. The registration deadline is one week prior to each session. *Don’t have a bike, but would like to participate? Call Portage Parks & Recreation at 329-4522 for options.
