  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. City Hall Exhibition - One-Room Schoolhouse

    Rotating exhibitions are featured in the atrium at Portage City Hall (7900 South Westnedge Avenue) throughout the year and focus on local arts and history. The exhibitions are FREE to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 4 PM. An exhibit to feature the historic One-Room District #8 Schoolhouse also known as Prairie Edge School built in 1856. Don’t miss these previously unpublicized large-scale images of what days were like during these times.

  4. Junior Ranger Earn-A-Badge - Endurance Badge

    The Junior Ranger Club is a fun way to learn more about the Portage Park system and to earn an official Junior Ranger shield as a wildlife steward. The Junior Ranger Club is an activity-based program offering eight different badges that can be earned by completing specific activities: arts, endurance, health, history, nature, science, service and survival. Need a little help with finishing your badges? During these programs, a Junior Ranger may bring an adult and together, work on specific badge activities. These programs are free, include supplies and are led by Parks staff. You can attend just one or all of the programs. Based on COVID restrictions, sessions may be offered virtually with supplies available for pick up at City Hall. All programs run from 6 – 7 PM. Space is limited, so do not wait to register!     Test your bike safety knowledge with a game-board style interactive trail! Bike from Celery Flats towards Bicentennial Park and stop at our hands-on bike “safety avenues.” Participate in a quick activity, collect your “Bike Bucks” and move on to the next space on the game board. At the end, hand in your “Bike Bucks” for an award! This program is a drop in with the last participant starting at 3:45 PM. ”Bike Bucks” have no cash value.

    Break out the binoculars. It’s time to go birding! This program is designed for 3rd - 5th graders to investigate the world of ornithology. Each month, in a different Portage Park, an expert will engage the young birders in basic birding and interactive lessons about the different aspects of living as a bird in Portage.   7. Paddlesports Sampler

    The Paddlesports Sampler is a great way to introduce a variety of watercraft to the aspiring paddlesports enthusiasts. Learn basic skills for kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards through games and fun activities with American Canoe Association certified instructors! All of the necessary equipment will be provided. Participants should dress accordingly for the weather and the possibility of getting wet. Choose between classes on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Maximum of 8 participants per class.

  8. Adult Pickleball Clinic - Beginner

    If you ever wondered what pickleball was all about, this clinic is for you! National Champions, Jim & Yvonne Hackenberg will teach players how to play the game, with a few basic game strategies and drills. Participants must bring their own paddle, but balls will be provided.   10. Garlic Mustard Pull

    May 30, 2021, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Schrier Park

    Garlic mustard is the most destructive invasive plant in Portage, with its rapid growth impeding native plants. Volunteer with the City of Portage Environmental Board to learn how to identify garlic mustard, remove it and properly dispose of it. All ages are welcome to participate. All garlic mustard pulls take place from 9 AM - 12 PM. Subscribe to Environmental Board updates, including weather cancellations and additional volunteer opportunities.
