  2. Shakespeare in the Park

    The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre’s Academy of Theatre Arts presents Shakespeare Outside: The Comedy of Errors. Shakespeare’s shortest and most farcical play about mistaken identity, it has everything from puns and wordplay to slapstick and physical comedy. When two sets of identical twins are separated at birth and then unknowingly end up in the same city, chaos and comedy ensue! Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday showings will be at 2 p.m., while Friday and Saturday showings will be at 7 p.m. All showings will be free, however they will be ticketed, as there is limited space. Please also note that the Hayloft Theatre will be the rain location for all showings.

  3. Portage Farmers Market

    The City of Portage is once again excited to partner with the People’s Co-op of Kalamazoo to offer a weekly farmers’ market! The farmers’ market will be held at City Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting May 6. The Portage Farmers’ Market vendors are all local so you know where your food and crafts are coming from. On select Sundays starting at noon, a horse and carriage will take patrons from the farmers’ market to Celery Flats, where historical tours, demonstrations and presentations will be occurring. Historical tour dates include May 6, June 17, July 29 and August 26. For more information, please call the Parks, Recreation and Senior Citizen Services Department at 329-4522.     Beginner Level is for new, inexperienced swimmers ages 5 and up. Beginning levels introduce basic aquatic skills such as floating, gliding, bobbing and breath control, as well as expand on kicking and stroke basics. Instructors use fun activities and games to make the water an enjoyable place and to help children learn the fundamentals and gain confidence in and around the water. Participants will also learn basic water safety. Intermediate Level builds off of the skills taught in the Beginner Level by coordinating strokes and increasing endurance. The skills learned from Beginner Level will be fine-tuned so participants can perform them independently. Rotary breathing is introduced and survival skills (floating and treading water) are progressed. Participants will also learn basic water safety.     We’ll be hopping in the lake to help participants get stronger and leaner with minimal impact on the joints! Aqua Boot Camp offers core training and improves cardiovascular endurance, balance, flexibility and strength using pool noodles and other buoyancy toys. Aqua Boot Camp is a high-intensity, low-impact shallow water class that is fun, fast and effective. Water shoes are recommended.     Luau Time!! The Parks department is excited to host its first ever Ramona Park Luau. Come join in on carnival games, inflatables, magic shows, balloon animals, music by a local DJ Jay Vee, watermelon eating contest and a limbo contest! Food and Food Trucks will be onsite and available for purchase. Magic shows will begin at 3:30 and 5 p.m. Watermelon eating contest will begin at 4:15 p.m. and Limbo Contest at 5:45 p.m., registration is now closed. Island Dancers & Fire Show will begin at 7:30 p.m. All Ramona Park fees apply prior to the event start time at 3 p.m.
