Portage Recycling Program Receives National Recognition
The City of Portage was recently recognized as a leader in recycling by How Green Is My Town, a nationally-recognized website (www.howgreenismytown.org/recycling-programs). Portage is one of three communities listed as a sterling performer in this sustainable effort by dramatically increasing the volume of recycled material collected by transitioning to the single stream collection process.
Thanks to Portage citizens who recycle, the volume of materials recycled has almost doubled since the program moved from dual-stream to the single-stream process. In 2014, Portage citizens recycled 118 tons of material per month. Last year, Portage citizens recycled 230 tons of material per month – an increase of 95%!
In addition to the citizens who recycle, a great deal of credit must also go to the Portage Environmental Board, the members of which worked tirelessly to research and advocate for single-stream recycling. The effort of the Portage Environmental Board speaks to the commitment the citizen board has to serve to the Portage community.
