City Engineer

The City of Portage, a progressive and growing community in southwest Michigan, is seeking an experienced professional for a City Engineer.  This position has responsibility for the implementation and development of Capital Improvement Program projects and budget.  Incumbent will assist in the management and administration of the water and sewer operation services contract.  This position involves the exercise of considerable independent judgment in determining work methods and procedures and is responsible for project scheduling and preparation of all federal, state and local agency reports.  This individual will review and prepare cost estimates for utility and street improvements, construction bids and consulting service proposals, as well as drafting and reviewing documents relating to public works, subdivision, and utility ordinances and regulations.  The individual in this position works under the general direction of and is specifically responsible to the Director of Transportation and Utilities.

 

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering or comparable field of study is required.  Five (5) years of experience in project engineering and management, preferably in a municipal government setting required.  Candidates must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License and be a registered State of Michigan Professional Engineer (or the ability to obtain the Professional Engineer’s License within six months of hire.) Candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment of civil engineering as applied to the design and construction of municipal infrastructures.
